چکیده

[i] We examine the relative importance of coherent and incoherent echo components in near-nadir radar scattering from self-affme surfaces. The coherent component, important only for observations at small incidence angles (nadir-looking sounders and altimeters), is a function of both surface roughness and scattering area. Models for the incoherent component require a minimum scattering area for validity; for smaller regions, the radar echo is overestimated. We propose a simple criterion for the horizontal scale that defines this shift in applicable scattering model and show the range of roughness parameters for which MARSIS, SHARAD, and possibly JIMO radar sounder measurements may be modeled using the two approaches.

A STUDY OF GAMMA RAY EXPOSURE BUILDUP FACTORS IN STRATIFIED SHIELDS FOR POINT ISOTROPIC SOURCES, INCLUDING THE EFFECTS OF INCOHERENT AND COHERENT SCATTERING

The effects of including incoherent (bound-electron) and coherent (Rayleigh) scattering in exposure buildup factor calculations for point isotropic gamma ray sources, penetrating a two-layer water-lead shield have been investigated in the gamma ray energy (E?) range of 40 keV to 3 MeV. Incoherent scattering decreases the values of these factors in both layers up to E? ~ 200 keV and the effect i...

Airborne and spaceborne ice sounding of Antarctica, Mars and Europa

Satellite-based radio echo sounding technique is of interest to the Earth science community over Antarctica and Greenland, as well as to the planetary science community for exploring subsurface structures of Mars and Europa. Pioneered by the Mars exploration community using MARSIS radar on board the Mars Express mission, such a technique has demonstrated ice sounding capability down to a few ki...

16b.1 Coherent Particle Scatter in Developing Cumulus Clouds

Two mechanisms important for the interpretation of radar observations of the atmosphere, are: coherent scattering from refractive index fluctuations of the clear-air and incoherent scattering from particles. These scattering mechanisms have very different wavelength dependencies and their contributions to the radar return can be separated by using two radars with different wavelengths. A differ...

Radar-Sounding of Icy Mantles and Comets Using Natural Radio Noise

Radar-sounding of ice sheets on Earth yields crucial information on ice history and dynamics, including discoveries of subglacial lakes beneath 3-4 km of ice [1]. Mars Express and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) have now demonstrated the corresponding power of orbital radar sounding for planetary exploration, in particular by imaging structures within and beneath kilometers of Martian wat...

Sensitivity Analysis of Brown Model Waveform in Radar Altimetry

In satellite altimetry (radar altimetry), the altimeter emits a pulse, with known power, to the earth surface and receives it back continuously to determine of the sea surface height. The time series of the mean returned power is recorded individually at satellite as the so-called waveform. Analytical model for the waveform is first introduced by Brown, which consists of six parameters: signif...
